Activity: Planning Work Experience

A work placement is an ideal way to introduce learners to the world of work. However, to be effective a 21st Century work placement should:

  • Reflect the student’s interests and strengths.
  • Be tailored to meet the needs of the student and negotiated between the student, teacher and company.
  • Inform the student how the company and its employees operate their business.
  • Contribute evidence towards portfolio assessment.
  • Develop the student’s skills including taking on responsibility, team working and communication.
  • Be evaluated against individual and cross-curriculum targets.
  • Be linked into other curriculum activities.
  • Be sustainable by developing positive relationships with employers and engaging them as real partners who can see the benefits to their industry in supporting such work.
