Biographical statement

I have led a successful Art Department for 15 years and devised a curriculum with an emphasis upon personal outcome, embracing cultural heritage and contemporary contextual references. I teach multi media, thematic projects that demonstrate continuity and progression, reflecting contemporary and traditional art practices and resource based learning.

I am in the unique position of being able to combine my experience of leading an inspiring Art Department with my extensive knowledge of teaching and learning. I was recently appointed as a Specialist Leader in Education and for the past 7 years I have worked as an Advanced Skills Teacher on outreach work that has grown from coaching individual teachers, to leading department improvement and coordinating a whole School to School support programme.

I have coordinated in-reach projects that contributed towards my School gaining accreditation as a National School of Creativity working with Creative Partnerships. I devised a unique event called the Creative Olympics, an inter-house competition with opportunities for all learners in school to compete in creative challenges, demonstrating multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary skills, working collaboratively across key stages, abilities and subjects led by artists and students. I have disseminated this and shared creative approaches to T&L at regional and national events including presentations at National Conferences on Creativity and TES Conference.

I have been a Secondary and Primary School Art Co-ordinator for my Borough delivering National Strategy & Curriculum updates, leading practical workshops & Inset sessions. I worked on behalf of the NSEAD as a Regional Advisor for implementing the new Secondary Art Curriculum. I liaised with Schools on developing innovative SoW, museum and gallery visits to enrich curriculums, demonstrating 3D techniques to teachers, establishing ceramics and advising on theoretical and practical aspects of Art, Craft and Design education.

My aim has been to contribute towards providing students with more equality of opportunity through a broader choice of media, creating more challenge and to engage all students in creative learning.

I have organised many artist in residence projects in School and across the Borough, introducing students to the work of contemporary artists and craftspeople, bringing Inset to department staff, sharing new techniques and ideas. Recently, my focus has been to increase School links with community and stakeholders through creative and artists led projects, culminating in local and national exhibitions. International visits and exhibitions have been an outcome of the Rivers of the World project and my partnership continues with Connecting Classrooms and a collaborative textile project initiated as a result of my visit to the UAE.

I am able to support Subject Leaders across the curriculum with planning and delivering an integrated curriculum for learners. I have experience of initial teacher training as well as coaching from NQT to outstanding teachers. I am able to implement creative strategies to improve teaching and learning through engagement, assessment, independent and personalized learning to raise student achievement. I can lead whole school inset sessions on T&L, Art, Craft and Design and can coordinate School to School support. I am also interested in improving community cohesion, working with student voice and student enrichment events.
