The English new secondary curriculum will be implemented in:

  • Year 7 from September 2008
  • Year 8 from September 2009
  • Year 9 from September 2010

New attainment targets (Levels) are to be used for assessment from 2011.

Ten subject associations, including the NSEAD, have been working with CfBT (a charitable trust) to provide the official subject specific support for the new secondary curriculum for all maintained schools. The subjects covered by this government contract are PSHE, citizenship, history, geography, design and technology, languages, art and design, PE, RE and music. To help you prepare for implementing the new curriculum this web site and associated CfBT, QCA and SSAT web sites provide subject specific planning tools (see links below) and a variety of other curriculum development resources.

The NSEAD is funded by the government to provide the art and design subject specific support for all art and design heads of department whether they are NSEAD members or not. The national subject leaders are John Bowden and John Steers. In addition 30 regional subject advisers (RSAs) have also been appointed and these people can be contacted to provide advice via John Bowden. The RSAs for art and design are available free of charge to help schools plan for the subject in the new curriculum. It is expected that local networks of schools or cluster groups will meet RSAs to discuss issues and develop ideas and initiatives. Such meetings may be whole day, half day or twilight sessions and could form a part of bigger events such as professional development days or local authority conferences. This free opportunity to meet and work with RSAs will continue until April 2009.

When contacting John Bowden to discuss the possibilities it would be helpful to know:
- Is this a request from an individual, department or a network?
- Do you require an overview of the new secondary curriculum?
- A post-briefing follow-up or some other form of support?
- What is your preferred date and time for a meeting?

Please give your name, a contact address and your telephone number.
