DfE are consulting on GCSE Art and Design content

The Department for Education and Ofqual have announced two public consultations. Ofqual are consulting on assessment objectives and the DfE on GCSE Art and Design content. Through NSEAD's Curriculum Board the Society will respond and this will be published on our website. The Society and its members are pleased that it has already been consulted about the development of GCSE Art and Design. The DfE's consultation will run from 15 July until 19 September 2014 and we encourage members to respond.

Whilst NSEAD is broadly supportive of the principles for content set out in the specialist areas of study and their link to progression pathways into the creative, media and design industries, there is some concern at the lack of clarity on the percentage of specialist knowledge and content uniquely relevant and distinctive to each course title. Similarly, this distinctive content and knowledge will require media specific criteria and assessment. The emphasis placed on practical learning in the subject seems also to undervalue the critical and theoretical study, and the importance of first-hand learning from creative practitioners and industries, galleries and museums. We anticipate the outcomes of the consultation will ensure experts in both the classroom and the creative and cultural sectors can further shape a vibrant and relevant offer for our young people.
