The Influence of Cultural Factors and Demographics on the Valuation of Art

Volume 16.3   1997

Some implications from this initial study are that art educators dealing with specific ethnic populations may wish to take the time to understand the cultural significance of art within the cultures of their students, so that they can better relate the meaning and value of art to them. This is not to say that one culture should be favoured over another, rather that each element of diversity brings a different strength, and that the challenge to art educators is the discovery of each culture's strengths. Researchers in art education should pursue the identification of substantive cultural differences and dimensions to refocus the discussion on fact instead of assumption.
