Visual Education and Art Education

Volume 8.1   1989

The paper suggests that the close identification of visual education with art education has three disadvantages. Firstly, it fails to provide a means of evaluating the various kinds of visual images that affect our lives. Secondly, it does not enable the use of drawing and modelling as a way of making sense of facts, and thirdly, it offers a misleading caricature of artistic expression. Whilst visual images are used in virtually all areas of the school curriculum, children are not, in subjects other than art, encouraged to devise visual images for themselves.
