The 1988 NSEAD Presidential Address: the Charge and Brief for Art Educators

Volume 8.2   1989

As NSEAD reaches its centenary, it is a time for pause, review and reflection on the successes of the past in order to be sure footed in the future. In revisiting the work of Read, Richardson, Field and others, it is clear that art education is in a strong position. The implementation of the National Curriculum, whilst confirming art's position as a foundation subject, has engendered fierce debate, particularly with regard to its relationship with Design, Technology and the other arts subjects. Art educators must work to their own brief, not to one set externally and guard against the estrangement of Art and Design in schools, and Art and Design in the wider community.
