Current Issues in Art and Design Education: Vocation and Destination: the Career Paths of Art and Design Graduates and the Uses and Abuses of ‘First Destination’ Statistics

This paper challenges the use of the first destination survey as an appropriate measure of whether a Higher Education course in Art and Design is worthwhile. It examines the term ‘vocation’, in both the occupational and religious senses. It suggests that higher education is a reflective and self-critical process, and that the values pursued by that process are in danger of being submerged by an uncritical use of the limited information available from this survey.
