The Refinement of Touch

Volume 8.3   1989

Formal education, particularly post-14, focuses on the right side of the brain and develops the mind rather than the senses, relegating art work to a pastime. Decision-makers within education have been successful within this system and have seldom had the opportunity to know the experience of art making. Children and indeed adults, have a natural desire to touch. The absorbing sensual pleasure of touching and working with natural materials both enriches lives and develops a respect for the earth as a living eco-system.
