Contemporary Art at School: the Education Sector at the Sao Paulo Biennial

Volume 8.3   1989

The Sao Paulo Biennial is a vast exhibition of contemporary art. School art is out of step with contemporary practice, but there is scarcity of information on ways in which children can relate to such art to meet the need to go beyond the acquisition of information and the transmission of culture. Fifty schools worked with the Education Sector to revise the Art Syllabuses in schools by introducing contemporary art issues and concepts. The project also worked with teachers and teacher trainers to develop new attitudes to contemporary visuality and build confidence in the teachers' own ability to interact with the work.
