Media Education and Art and Design: Other Ways of Seeing

Volume 10.1   1991

This paper considers the key features of media education and art and design education and argues that they should have a common pedagogical approach from which each would draw strength. In most schools media education has been located within English departments with a focus on enabling children to gain a critical understanding of the world and cultural environment in which they live. Art and design education has tended to emphasize the making of images and artefacts. The paper describes two case studies in which photography is used to explore the mutual strengths of English and art and design, thus proposing the sphere of media studies as an important point of contact between the two disciplines.
