Speaking, Listening and Critical Studies in Art

Volume 10.1   1991

Although teachers of art are pleased to see their discipline included as a foundation subject in the National Curriculum, there is widespread concern about the time allocation it is likely to receive in comparison to other foundation and core disciplines. This paper offers one possible approach to address these concerns in cross-curricular work that, in equal measure, promotes the interests of both disciplines involved. By looking at the NC requirements it is clear that attainment targets for English can be satisfactorily reached through critical studies in art. Programmes of study and their outcomes are described that centre on the development of many of the speaking and listening skills listed in the NC for English, while at the same time, equally extend and develop the capacity to respond to visual art.
