Making Sense of Culture: Opening Up Definitions of Art and Design Education

Volume 10.2   1991

There is a concern at present to open up definitions of culture - the 'cultural industries; 'culture led', 'cultural media', and so on. This is paralleled by developments in the recent history of art and design education where writers like David Thistlewood, David Best and Irena Wojnar have variously indicated the need for a definition of art that is more inclusive and hence a pluralist approach to the curriculum that is more flexible and adaptable to change. It is argued that there is an inexorability in the relationship between the cultural definition debate and the emergent roles and structure of art and design education in order to achieve strategies which are appropriate for their time. Models of curriculum development are offered based on the Scottish experience.
