Roles of Practising Teachers and University Lecturers in Initial Training of Teachers of Art and Design

Volume 10.3   1991

What do teachers of art and design in secondary schools need to know in order to teach effectively? How and in what setting do prospective art and design teachers best acquire such professional knowledge? What are the particular contributions experienced teachers and lecturers can make to their learning? This paper reports an investigation into the particular contributions to initial training made by practising teachers and lecturers in art and design education. The research explored, and attempted to clarify, their respective roles during the school experience of student-teachers following a specialist PGCE course.
