International Journal of Art & Design Education

Identifying the Core in art and Design

Volume 1.1   1982

The paper seeks to clarify some matters relating to the art and design curriculum per se in the recognition that curriculum development is only one of the factors which influence the provision and practice of art and design education in schools and colleges. Four interactive and interdependent domains are proposed as the general directions within which all art and design forms and the variety of ways they are produced, perceived, discussed, appraised, valued, and understood can be described. These are the Expressive/Productive, the Perceptual, the Analytical/Critical and the Historical/Cultural domains. In conclusion it is suggested that the varieties of roles, purposes and functions of art and design education can be expressed in a series of goals that are then summarised.
