National Criteria for a Single System of Examining at 16+ with reference to Art and Design

This paper attempts to identify some of the problems associated with art and design education and examinations in the light of the development of the proposed General Certificate in Secondary Education (GCSE). Particular attention is given to the backwash of the examination system on the curriculum and criterion referenced assessment. Price argues that the GCE/CSE merger necessitates a re-appraisal and affords an opportunity to question the suitability of present practices, but must not be permitted to degenerate into the lowest common denominator of a compromise continuum.
