Reflections on Art Education

Volume 1.3   1982

Former Staff Inspector for Art and Design, Ralph Jeffery HMI provides a reminder of the progress made in art and design education and outlines some areas in which schools and colleges, and the NSAE, should seek to remedy deficiencies. Initiatives such as the Gulbenkian report on the arts in schools, the new Confederation of Art and Design Associations, the proposed 'Design into Industry' exhibition, are all welcomed. However attention is drawn to deficiencies of teaching and learning in primary school; and in secondary schools, to the balance of the curriculum, the content of the curriculum and the method. Comments are made about further and higher education, and finally the author makes some suggestions about the future role of the NSAE as a subject association.
