Discipline Based Art Education in Secondary Schools: a Possible Approach

Volume 11.3   1992

Anna Kindler elaborates her interpretation of the American approach to reform of the art curriculum which is most frequently described as 'discipline-based art education' (DBAE). The curriculum described is intended for middle and senior school pupils, is entirely theoretical in nature, and is designed to be offered concurrently with a course of art studio practice. Kindler's programme includes learning about folk art traditions, craft practices, cultural history, perceptual psychology, and 'ethnographic' discussion of the art of children and non-Western societies. There is much emphasis on informed criticism and appreciation, ranging from historical issues in art to the most recent manifestations of contemporary art practice.
