A View of Fine Art Education in Britain

Volume 3.1   1984

An illustrated account of a national, selected exhibition, the 'Whitworth Young Contemporaries' held at the University of Manchester in 1983. The 109 exhibits provided a barometer of what is going on in fine art education and were selected from 1,000 entries submitted by students from 36 colleges or departments in higher education. Questions are raised about the approach and structure of fine art courses in Britain, the conclusion being that they require urgent re-appraisal. Dependence on self-reliance for motivation and practice has led to stagnation and indicates the unease that is felt in Britain about fine art education.
