A View of the Crisis at the Top

Volume 3.1   1984

An article originally titled 'Art's last stand', published in the TES 29 July 1983. Argues that a crisis has been produced in British art and design education by attempts to associate design only with the technical and mechanical. Is fine art and essential part of design education? Should students be taught techniques or attitudes? Although the utilitarian and technological concerns of government and tensions between fine art and design are identified as factors, the crisis emanates from the faction fighting and managerial crisis at the Royal College of Art.
