Artistic Perception: the Cultural Context

Volume 3.3   1984

Artistic perception takes place within a cultural context. In a pluralist culture we need to be concerned with the meaning of art for a variety of viewers and cultural participators. A survey of literature indicates limitations in the way that the typical Western aesthetically oriented focus has guided the study of artistic perception. Because artistic perception takes place within a socio-cultural context we should adopt a broader approach to its study. Art educationists need to do more to study artistic perception as a social phenomenon; we need to become more anthropological in method and more semiotic in intent.
