Developing a Postgraduate Curriculum in Design Management for Korea

Volume 11.1   1992

The paper opens with a brief account of the various definitions of 'design management' and its international development since the 1960s. Chung proposes three conceptual areas of design management: the corporate, organisation and project levels. Established Canadian (McMaster University) and British (CNAA) models for design management are compared and found to have a number of underlying similarities. However, whilst the Canadian model focuses on techniques and principles of management related to design, the British model is geared to a curriculum in managing design. From these two existing models Chung develops a postgraduate design management curriculum specifically for Korea. The Korean model proposes separate pathways for design students and for management students.
