Some Student teachers' Experiments in Art Education and Humanistic Understanding

Volume 4.1   1985

The author's PGCE students explore the relationship between humanistic education and art education through practical curriculum workshops. Themes for these experiments include 'Learning About People Through Art', 'Heroes and Heroines' and 'Indian Culture'. Media employed include ceramics, puppetry, mural painting, woodcarving, papermaking and photography, where students are encouraged to look beyond formal composition into the personality of the sitter. She concludes with the suggestion that such strategies offer a practical solution to the problem of extending the art specialist's thinking beyond the technical and of fulfilling, to a degree, the six humanistic functions identified for art by Katchadourian.
