Art Teacher Training in Britain (1852-1985) with special reference to Leeds

Volume 4.2   1985

A history of art teacher training is charted from the time of the establishment of the Leeds School of Art and the staged examination structure of Sir Henry Cole's 'National Course of Instruction'. The effects of various education acts on the recruitment and training of teachers is chronicled as is the ebb and flow of the subject's status and the demographics of the post World War 2 boom. Various projects describe the changing zeitgeist. The author concludes with a warning that a successful system is in danger of being undermined by a succession of Education Secretaries who appear to ignore the contribution made by art and design to education as a whole.
