The Perception of Pattern

Volume 4.2   1985

The author examines the human instinct for pattern making both in the visual arts and in music. The word is defined and she calls for a more structured approach to the teaching of pattern in primary schools. Whether as a subject in its own right, or as an integrated study, she suggests that pattern is a significant subject for the primary curriculum, not only for its contribution to visual education but, in its broader sense, as an enhancement of a child's awareness of how the world is organized.
