Volume 5.1   1986

The concepts of culture and identity are defined with reference to social, political, economic, aesthetic and religious norms. The problem of identity in the modern world is discussed and the role of art in addressing this problem is examined. The greater problem of smaller cultures being swallowed by larger, stronger ones is identified and the notion of unity in diversity, through the arts is put forward as a way of dealing with it. The unifying function of the performing arts exemplified by the success of the Second World Black and African Festival of Negro Arts [FESTAC ยน77]. This festival is presented as a model for ensuring that cultural identity is preserved and celebrated.
