Creativity Centres in the Netherlands: Policy and Practice

Volume 5.1   1986

Creativity centres are institutions, which provide an education in the visual arts and to a lesser extent audio-visual techniques, drama and dance. Case studies of two institutions, representing different approaches to art education are described. One pursues aims relating to personal development and social awareness (subjectivist), the other pursuing aims relating to the intrinsic value of art (objectivist). It was hypothesised that discrepancies between the institutions would be found in their organisation and general approaches; these were found at the macro level, but at a day to day micro level, there were fewer differences, due in part to such limitations as the expectations of the participants. New developments in non-school art education are needed in order to address the needs of the community in a more experimental way.
