Personal Autonomy and the Place of Art Games in Art Education: Primary Art Curriculum

Volume 5.1   1986

The new art curriculum in Yugoslavia (Croatia)is based upon the creative process of art making rather than the former focus on the finished product. It aims to facilitate children’s personal development in a wider variety of techniques and media. The creative game is emphasised as an approach to pictorial expression, stimulating individuals’ spontaneity and fluency as well as problem-solving skills. An example is given of a two and three-dimensional game involving both art and mathematics. One outcome of this game was large-scale grids and interwoven forms. The teacher takes on a facilitating role by presenting objects and asking questions such as: ‘Can you change the material, the size shape or structure?’ Children are encouraged to be active creative rather than passive observers.
