Art, Assessment and Ethnocentrism

Volume 5.1   1986

The two-tier system of 16+ examinations (GCE and CSE) are looked at with reference to cultural fairness and diversity. It was found that there was very little reference to the multicultural nature of British society in any of the examination boardsĀ¹ material; calligraphy, for example was almost exclusively based on Roman letter forms (as opposed to Arabic script). For the most part, assessment criteria are concerned with formal values, technical skill and design processes. Cultural and social dimensions of art are virtually not considered. However, multicultural approaches to art remains the concern of the committed teacher and there may be an opportunity to influence examination boards with regard to suitable examinations, particularly in the are of art history.
