Enquiry in Cultural Identity and Realisation through the Arts: A Review of Literature

Volume 5.1   1986

This paper reviews the literature in the social and cultural foundations of art and its implications for art education. The particular focus is upon art as a repository of cultural meaning (or a system of signification). The literature reviewed dates from Vasari (1542) through to Wolff (1983). Reference is made to the sociology of music in order to inform the debate about the relationship between art and culture in a pluralistic society; it is acknowledged that more disparate social groupings exist in the world of music than that of art. Visual arts educators need to be concerned with an increasingly broad interpretation of what is meant by art, and who determines it.
