Reconceptualising the Art Curriculum

This paper is an edited version of the 1997 NSEAD Presidential Address delivered at the combined INSEA/ NSEAD Conference in Glasgow. Although it is a personal view of contemporary secondary school art education in England and Wales, conference delegates from a number of countries have indicated a strong parallel with their own experiences under the centralising influence of national, state or regional curricula. The paper offers some alternative views and purposes.
