Traditional Culture, Architecture and Design in the Kurpie Region of Poland: Past and Present Education and Cultural Identity

Volume 17.2   1998

This paper addresses the cultural and educational problems associated with the folk traditions of the Kurpie region in Poland. Traditional culture with its artistic dimensions is still very much alive among both the older and younger generations in this rural area. As well as describing certain aspects of this unique culture, I shall present the results of my research on the cultural identity of the younger generation in the Kurpie region and on the handing down of the cultural legacy. In fact there is a clash between the traditional indigenous culture and contemporary western culture raising the question of how the traditional values and cultural identity of the region's younger generation can be preserved.
