State of the Arts

Volume 17.2   1998

The research investigates the attitudes and perceptions of teachers and students to their arts education. The teacher group comprised 38 teachers of Art, Dance, Drama, Music, English and Media Studies; the student group comprised approximately 2,500 girls and boys aged 11 to 16 years. The schools were selected with a view to providing a fair sample across a range of factors: age, gender, ethnicity and socio-economic background. Two schools were grant maintained, one was a single-sex grammar school. All the schools could claim to provide evidence of good practice in the arts. A comparison is made between the data collected in the present study and data collected, also at Exeter, in a similar study undertaken in 1971.
