Visual Literacy and the Art Curriculum

Volume 18.1   1999

Since the early 1990s when visual literacy was enshrined in the English National Curriculum for Art as the goal of art and design education, much debate has been generated about what the phrase might mean and how to go about achieving it. The research I conducted recently with the Arts Council of England and Middlesex University addressed this question through a series of interviews with artists and educators in different levels and sectors of visual education - schools, museums, higher education. We were seeking to understand visual literacy better by studying the discussion surrounding it. The paper reports on the experience.
