National Curriculum Art and Music

Volume 14.3   1995

Given that the revised Orders are to shape curriculum design, practice and assessment for the time being this paper looks at what all the formulation, consultation and revision have achieved. The paper considers a number of questions to establish what view of art and music emerges from the Orders. Closely connected with this is the view of arts education embodied therein. I want to look at the papers in terms of the guidance and support given to teachers in the shaping of children's experience in the arts and, particularly, at how the notions of 'progression' and 'development' are handled. I shall further consider whether the publishing of separate Orders for the different arts would seem justified.
