Art & Design Education in South Africa

Volume 2.3   1983

This paper presents an overview of art and design education in South Africa. The greater awareness of art and design in South Africa brings new challenges to those concerned with the subject in all its elements. The paper considers the impact of art centres in South Africa before describing secondary education in the country. The impact of the Design Institute in promoting design and education in South Africa is considered, together with the blossoming of talent and recognition for non-white artists. The paper describes the two main types of institutions providing tertiary education: universities offering degree courses; and the Technikons, offering National Diploma courses.
