Photo-media Studies in a Primary School: Looking through the Family Album

Volume 9.2   1990

Kim Louise Walden is concerned to prepare primary school children for a future in which they will need to be visually literate if their sensibilities are not to be exploited by the power of photography. She argues that they must become so familiar with the medium that they become almost contemptuous of its imperfections. What is unusual about Kim Louise Walden’s work is that she bases teaching and learning in the context of children’s inherited popular culture as reflected in the family’s own use of the photographic medium.
