The Significance of Art Making for Individuals

Volume 9.3   1990

Sharpened perception, enhanced creative conception, and greatly increased confidence in personal ability resulting in heightened self-esteem, are among the outcomes of participation in making art. In this paper Keith Gentle strongly recommends the use of ‘art making’ in education in preference to ‘creating’, ‘inventing’ or ‘designing’ because it is more neutral and conveys relatively few preconceptual associations. He comes to these conclusions as a result of his study of the significance of the engagement of students in art making, of which this is a report.
