Diderot and David: Theory and Practice in Art Education

Volume 15.3   1996

The paper examines Diderot's and David's views on art education and whether the former influenced the latter. It is in three parts. The first examines Diderot's views on art education, particularly drawing instruction. The second looks at the possibility that Diderot may have shared these views with David. The third examines David's approach to teaching. The sources emphasised are Diderot's Essais sur la peinture and mÄmoires by David's students.
