Five Scribbles: An Inquiry Into Artistic Intention and Critical Empathy

Volume 13.3   1994

From a collection of several hundred manifestations of ‘scribble’ from a variety of sources, five examples have been examined. The examples were gathered after art-making behaviour was observed focusing particularly on ‘intentionality’ and with the purpose of entering the experience of the scribbler through empathetic understanding. The examples are selected to deliberately reveal the diversity of the maker; viz., a precocious three year old, an elephant, an autistic, blind and deaf ten year old, a schizophrenic adult, and a known artist. The paper concludes by speculating on commonalities of intention and result in mark-making individuals.
