Design as a Tool for Cultural Change - Glasgowis Experience

Volume 16.1   1997

This paper is about my experience of using design to promote cultural change in an urban environment, namely Glasgowis. There are four parts, and I believe that all four areas must be considered before any strategy for design-led urban change can be developed. These are defining what we mean by design, defining what we mean by culture, identifying the characteristics of urban environments (Glasgow's in particular), and ascertaining the economic benefits and social profits from design knowledge.
