Development of Pictorial Representation: A Teleology-based Model

Volume 16.3   1997

In the postmodern world, exploration of a large spectrum of pictorial repertoires is particularly appropriate and relevant. When art educators talk about global education, multiculturalism and cross-cultural understanding, it is important to examine the concepts fundamental to their pedagogical interventions. The conceptualisation of early development of pictorial representation that we have outlined in this paper offers an understanding of artistic growth that is less culture-bound than stage theories and allows for charting an initial map of pictorial repertoires: a map that will grow and become more complete with the continuing scholarly inquiry into this fascinating domain of human experience.
