Leading Primary Art and Design

This online course will take place online, and is designed for primary subject leaders who are looking to develop this curriculum area in their schools. It will offer strategies for building the foundations for developing confidence, enthusiasm and key knowledge in this subject, as well as an understanding of how to plan for progression across the primary years

Online half-day CPD

Art and Design as a subject has proved itself to be more important than ever during the global pandemic, as primary teachers use creative means to engage children in learning and cater for their wellbeing needs on the return to school. However, the subject has been in decline in primary schools over recent years, leaving many teachers without the skills and knowledge to provide good quality learning experiences for children. Now future OFSTED inspections will focus on whether schools can offer a quality broad and balanced curriculum, it is urgent that schools address this skills gap – but where to start?

This online course  will support participants by offering both practical experiences, based upon pedagogical principles, and will help to develop creative confidence in providing children with opportunities for experimenting and exploring with art materials. Subject leaders will learn how to work with staff to ensure they are fully equipped to provide a high-quality art curriculum, as well as to create a vibrant and creative learning environment for children. The course will provide an opportunity to reflect and begin to develop an action plan that can be implemented in their schools.

Based upon the 2017 publication, Teaching Primary Art and Design, the course will be run by its author, Susan Ogier. Susan has over 20 years of experience in providing training in Primary Art and Design for teachers and working with teaching students at the University of Roehampton. Her recent publication, A Broad and Balanced Curriculum in Primary Schools: educating the whole child (2019) is published by Sage. She is able to turn the most nervous and unconvinced teacher into a committed art enthusiast within the first hour!
