A crisis in the creative arts in the UK? Professor John Last, Vice Chancellor, Norwich University of the Arts

Professor John Last, Vice Chancellor, Norwich University of the Arts (NUA) has summarised a recent review, commissioned by Norwich University of the Arts, which reports on the impact of recent policies on arts and design subjects in one locality.

Taking the county of Norfolk as an example, Professor John Last, summarises key quantitative and qualitative findings. The report has revealed the knock-on effect of the Ebacc in schools, to include the reduction of reported time for art and design and reduced options for the subject available in schools

John Last comments: 'There is a flaw in the logic that says to count is to be economically productive, but to create is not.' Last continues: 'To put it bluntly, the creative sector today faces the same issues as the Roberts Report outlined for Science and Engineering in 2002. We need to nurture what might be called ‘ADaM’ – Art, Design and Media – in the same way as STEM.'

The full report, carried out by NSEAD member Hilary Gresty will be published in due course.
