Make a collection of posters, prints, books and postcards that are related to Islamic art.
Show the children a wide example of work which contains different, patterns, colours and techniques. Talk a little about the ideas that lie behind the images and motifs. Discuss how the children think the artists craftsworkers went about their work; that the art must have been made in different stages; and that the final result can take a very long time to achieve.
Centre the discussion around the decorative use of line. Together, follow the course of one of these lines, allowing the children to understand the intricate and complex way that they have been constructed.
