Helping children to become more aware of pattern through collecting and drawing them
Helping children to become more aware of pattern through collecting and drawing them is the theme of this unit. Having made a collection the children are invited to select their favourite examples and develop original patterns from elements of those selected.
Make a collection of patterns. Can the children recognise a repeating pattern? If not you may wish to start this project by looking at the unit 'repeating patterns'. Talk about patterns in the classroom. Make a collection of patterns. You could invite children to bring in an example of something that has a pattern from home. They could search through the library for images of natural patterns. Can you find examples of patterns used as decorative or spiritual designs from different cultures? They could take rubbings of any patterns outside. All these patterns can be included in the collection.
