Using Rod Taylor's 'content', 'form', 'process' and 'mood' as potential starting points for children to discuss works of art, a model is given in this unit for examining an artefact. Importantly, children's personal responses are stressed as a fifth element in the process. The aim of the unit is to break down the barriers that can exist between children and works of art.
The British art educator, Rod Taylor, suggest a conceptual structure to help teachers and children work with all manner of art, craft and design objects. 'Four fundamental areas all have teaching potential', wrote Rod Taylor in 'Educating for Art'. The areas are content, form, process, and mood. The following description has been adapted from 'The Arts in Primary School' Rod Taylor and Glenys Andrews, Falmer Press, 1993.
