Transforming into an Artist-Teacher in ACL: A constructed substantive theory

The presentation presents a theory on how individuals become artist-teachers in adult community learning (ACL) in the UK by Abbie Cairns, Artist Teacher and Founder of ATACL conference

Abstract

The presentation presents a theory on how individuals become artist-teachers in adult community learning (ACL) in the UK. The theory suggests three groups of artist-teachers, each experiencing a series of basic social processes in their journey towards becoming an artist-teacher. The social processes include experiencing art in childhood, art education, first career, informal teaching experience, practicing as an artist, teaching, training as a teacher, and identifying as an artist-teacher in ACL. The theory is based on interview data from 17 artist-teachers in ACL and uses grounded theory.
