Examinations in Art and Design

Back

Examinations changes and the impact on art and design.

In the meeting of NSEAD Council and Forum on 28 September 2019, a series of policy priorities were voted and identified. The 'Examinations changes and the impact on art and design' special interest group was democratically voted as a key priority area for policy, research and action.

Members of NSEAD Forum and Council serve on this SIG and began their work in February 2020.

To date, the Examinations in Art & Design SIG has produced two significant pieces of work:

  • The Raw Marks Survey was conducted on in May and July 2024, and aims to identify the impact on teachers and learners of giving centre-assessed raw marks to GCSE, AS and A level art and design candidates. NSEAD members have year on year expressed their increasing concerns about the process. Despite teachers best efforts to organise and share raw marks with their candidates, this report concludes that an independent subject-specific review of the process is urgently needed, and given our findings, that the process ends as soon as possible. Read the full report and our findings via the link below.
  • Data Targets in Art and Design is a detailed analysis of the validity and changes in using SATs data in English secondary schools, for setting GCSE and KS3-4 flightpath progress targets in art and design. This is not pertinent to all UK schools, but is specific to changes in England and to a lesser extent in Wales and Northern Ireland. Please access the resource via the link below.
