Baseline Thinking in Art and Design is guidance for subject leaders and teachers of art and design in secondary schools. It sets out the context to the setting of GCSE target grades in art and design and makes the case for adding benchmarking information on both ability and prior experience in art and design. Baseline Thinking will help departments plan for cohort profiling and the setting of targets based on the changing ability profile of students of year 7 intakes. Subject leaders will need to negotiate how subject-specific assessments might be used to inform targets, or at the very least, be used to redefine curriculum planning, challenge and expectations within the department.
The guidance includes an audit template to help gather benchmark assessments, questions to help departments plans for benchmarking and further thinking on probability predictions.
